April 2021 update

I’ve updated some content across the page. Most of the changes are in Organizations/Companies, News, Angel Groups, and VCs sections. The Vancouver Tech industry and community continues to grow and expand. The industry has now grown to a size unimaginable when I left university in the early 1990s. It is incredible to have witnessed this amount of expansion.

William Johnson continues to do a great job with his newsletter and articles on the community and I keep adding more links to his work. • Governments love changing the names of things. A favourite was the fact that the BC Government Tech Strategy link now returns 404  🙂

April 2018 Updates

The start-up economy in Vancouver just keeps gathering steam and is getting more and more coverage in the media. I made a few updates to the guide, mainly in the areas of Accelerators and VCs. Vancouver Startup Week and more updates

There are a ton of good activities happening this week during Vancouver Startup Week. The start-up community in Vancouver seems to be growing and strengthening steadily. I’ve added some new content to the guide in the area of Company Maps, Angel Funds, and VCs. I still think I have pointers to the majority of organizations in the community on this guide, but it’s hard to keep up. In the area of angel funds, which are often subject to excruciatingly long waits before seeing cash returns, the WUTIF fund saw two good exits in the past months: Zymeworks and Daiya Foods. This hopefully gives angel investors some reassurance that eventually returns can come from early stage investing funds!

More Updates and Other New Guides

I’m continuing to update this guide as I find new organizations and resources for Vancouver tech startups.

I’ve also discovered a number of other new guides that have sprung up:

  • The BC Tech Association has gone public with their very impressive BC TechBase database of companies, acquisitions, and financings.
  • William Johnson has created a guide with a big categorized list of resources at Vancouver Tech Journal. He also has a good newsletter. Between his newsletter and the TNET newsletter I find I can keep up with local tech news in a fairly efficient way.
  • BCIC has a page that collects lists of useful resources for entrepreneurs.
  • Bounded State software has a Startup Guide that both overlaps and expands on this guide (and looks very sleek and modern).

Thanks and updates to startup resources and VCs

This guide has been up for a couple of months now and I really appreciate those that have tweeted about this guide to help get the word out about its existence. I’ve made a few additions to the list of startup programs, co-working spaces, and VCs. I elected to split co-working spaces out from the accelerators and other entrepreneur training programs. This is partly just because the list was becoming too long. The split isn’t a precise distinction since a lot of co-working spaces also offer some support/training programs. As always, send me any feedback and I hope you find this useful!

Thoughts on what content to include in this guide

Here are some thoughts regarding gathering content for this guide. I came across a lot of unanswered questions as I was collecting information. I’ll throw just a few out there, hoping that someone reading this might be able to help me out.

Generally the lists of items in this guide are intended to be starting points for further learning. The intent is just to give a head start into the community. The lists aren’t intended to be comprehensive or definitive. That being said, send me suggestions for updates and I’ll try to update the guide over time to keep it reasonably accurate and useful.

I have avoided trying to list all the companies, start-ups, or service providers in town. This is far beyond my capabilities and time available. WeAreYVR (now defunct) was an attempt to create a more comprehensive database like this.

Does anyone put out a good newsletter or blog covering the tech start-up scene in Vancouver or BC? The news sites and newsletters that I know of so far are more general tech industry focused.
However, following taking into account the tumor stage, the tumor discount online viagra grade, the man’s age along with the man’s overall wellness, some medical practitioners would advocate other treatment methods. It felt a bit strange to me to only include bricks-and-mortar institutions in these lists since I personally think some of the best educational materials can be found on-line right now. But the intent of this site is to list Vancouver-specific resources and not re-do a more general list of on-line resources. However that might be a project for another day since I think there are some potholes still in navigating the on-line education landscape.

I took at stab at job boards and listings, but I didn’t really have much knowledge since likely it’s been a long long time since I was looking for a job.

How I came to put together this guide

To give some context for this guide, I thought I’d give a summary of my story, which is really the story behind this guide.

My education is in Computer Engineering at UBC back in the 80’s and 90’s. I then spent most of the next 20 years working at MacDonald Dettwiler (MDA) in Richmond. At MDA I did lots of different things. We built some pretty amazing systems, everything from weather radar systems to a whole satellite mission (RADARSAT-2). For most of my time there I was involved with satellite ground segments which are essentially very large, semi-custom, software systems that cover the whole range from user ordering, to satellite control, to handling huge volumes of satellite imagery data.

About 4 years ago, I made the decision to leave MDA and move into the world of smaller tech businesses. As part of this transition I had to learn about the state of the local tech industry. I had been with a big company for so long that I had lost track of what was going on my my own city. While at MDA, I had worked in satellite earth observation, and in that industry the customers and suppliers aren’t in Vancouver, they’re scattered across the globe.

It was a really interesting process to re-discover the Vancouver Tech community and and learn about the tech start-up scene. One of the ways that I did this was to make a few angel investments in a some local start-ups and angel funds. Getting involved in this kind of investing really forces you look at a lot of companies and learn about different industries and technologies. A great, but time consuming learning experience! I viewed this process as a portion of creating my own real-world MBA (a term I cribbed from Tim Ferriss’s description of angel investing as an MBA alternative).

Learn more effective benefits of Kamagra to overcome the ill-effects cialis tablets australia of excessive self-stimulation: Mast Mood oil is another such supplement which improves erectile dysfunction significantly. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour online order viagra on others without getting a few drops on yourself.” – Og Mandino I love fragrances of all kinds but especially those erotic, woodsy, scents like the ones I have worn for years. You can tell your man to make lifestyle changes to boost viagra online without prescription male fertility naturally. So if you are suffering erection problems, it is cipla cialis generika important to find out the cause Know more about the ED as much as you can. In the process of exploring the Vancouver tech world I collected various links, lists, newsletter subscriptions, etc. that helped paint a picture of the tech industry landscape. So I decided to organize this stuff and put it out there in case someone else found the info useful. At first it was just a page on my own personal, and pathetic, web site. But I had a desire to learn a bit more about I could do with WordPress and so this became a good test project. I was also really trying to work on a bigger project at the time and this was a nice “procrastination” project. I have realized that if I’m trying to learn something about a technology, the most enjoyable way for me is to build something (for example like my craft beer tasting tour mapping tool www.routebeer.net that I used to trick myself into learning JavaScript and responsive sites).

I realized that I won’t have the time to make frequent updates to this, so I avoided putting in any info that has a shorter lifespan than maybe a 6 to months. So no events listings, no calendars, no “who’s hiring now”, list of current start-ups, etc.

I’d be really happy if this helps some new graduates, entrepreneurs, investors, etc. get started in the Vancouver Tech Community.
